Dr. Sophie Lebel, C. Psych

Dr. Sophie Lebel is a clinical health psychologist and Full Professor at uOttawa with a Ph.D. from Université de Montréal, Québec. She joined the University of Ottawa Faculty in July 2007 after completing a post-doctoral fellowship at the Princess Margaret Cancer Center in Toronto, Ontario.

Her research interests focus on cancer survivors and their families, with a focus on developing and testing questionnaires, models, and interventions for fear of cancer recurrence, sexuality, fatigue, stigma, and dyadic adjustment.

Dr. Lebel is currently supervising the Doctoral dissertations of Alanna Chu, Lauriane Giguère, Nicole Rutkowski, Jani Lamarche, Ghizlène Sehabi, and Malick Outtara.

  • Brooke Russell, PhD

    Postdoctoral Fellow

    Brooke Russell is a clinical psychologist and postdoctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Calgary in 2024. Her research interests focus on fear of cancer recurrence and other psychosocial outcomes for survivors of childhood cancer. She is currently working on adapting the Fear of Cancer Recurrence Therapy (FORT) intervention for adolescent and early young adult survivors of childhood cancer. Her clinical interests are in clinical, health, and rehabilitation psychology and she has a small clinical practice seeing children, teens, and young adults with cancer.

  • Alanna Chu, MPH

    Clinical Psychology Ph.D Candidate

    Alanna Chu is a doctoral candidate in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Ottawa. Her research interests are in the experiences of fear of cancer progression and supportive care needs of patients with advanced and metastatic lung cancer receiving an immunotherapy or targeted therapy. Her clinical interests are in clinical, health and rehabilitation psychology. She received her Master of Public Health in Epidemiology with a collaborative specialization in addictions from the University of Toronto in 2019 and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Queen’s University.

  • Lauriane Giguère

    Clinical Psychology Ph.D Candidate

    Lauriane Giguère is a doctoral candidate in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Ottawa. Her research interests focus on clinical fear of cancer recurrence, including the development of measures and interventions for fear of cancer recurrence as well as the impact of fear of cancer recurrence on caregivers of cancer patients or survivors.

  • Ghizlène Sehabi

    Clinical Psychology Ph.D Student

    Ghizlene is a second year PhD student in clinical psychology. Ghizlene strives to provide culturally sensitive care to diverse populations. Ghizlene's research interests include exploring the cancer experience within minority ethnic communities, particularly focusing on the fear of cancer recurrence.

  • Malick Outtara

    Clinical Psychology Ph.D Student

    Malick is a first year Ph.D student in clinical psychology. Malick’s research interests include studies on older adults and the general population living with cancer.

  • Emma Kearns

    Research Coordinator

    Emma Kearns is a Research Coordinator for the Psychosocial Oncology Lab at the University of Ottawa. Working on contract through the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Emma works closely with PSO graduate students on laboratory research projects and is responsible for laboratory and research administration.

    Emma is an incoming clinical psychology student at the University of Calgary and will be studying psychosocial oncology interventions under the supervision of Dr. Perri Tutelman.

  • Celeste Holy

    Research Coordinator

    Celeste is a Research Coordinator for the Psychosocial Oncology Lab and is currently overseeing the adaptation of FORT for parents of childhood cancer survivors (Parent FORT). She is interested in the impact of interventions targeting the psychological needs of children and their caregivers.

    Celeste is currently a graduate student in the MA Counselling program at the University of Ottawa.

  • Anne Leslie

    Research Coordinator

    BSc, Health Sciences, University of Ottawa

    Anne holds an Honours Interdisciplinary Health Sciences undergraduate degree from the University of Ottawa, as well as an Advanced Diploma in Medical Radiation Technology from Algonquin College. In addition to working as a research assistant on the Living With Lung Cancer study, Anne works in mammography as a diagnostic imaging technologist at The Ottawa Hospital. Anne has a keen interest in interdisciplinary approaches to healthcare, and how facilitating continuity of care can lead to improved patient experiences.

  • Wardat Yasmine Sehabi

    Yasmine is a medical student at the University of Ottawa.

    Psychiatry being one of her areas of interest, she is actively working in the lab to enhance her skills in health psychology and expand her knowledge in interdisciplinary care.


  • Florence Gourgues

    Florence is a volunteer for the PSO lab. She is actively involved in the Fear Of Recurrence Therapy (FORT) project. She will graduate with an Honours B.A. in Psychology in 2025. 

    Florence's research interests are to better define the impact of the disease on parental roles and family caregivers.

  • América Prudent

    America Prudent is a volunteer and 4th year student in Psychology B.A at the University of Ottawa. She's currently working on the Fear of Recurrence Therapy (FORT) project and on the impact of fear of recurrence on caregivers. She will graduate with an Honours B.A. in Psychology in 2026.
